The Matangini Project was initiated in 2005 with the intention of helping school children living in rural areas of East Africa. Dr Mark Booth, from the University of Cambridge, visits Kenya and Uganda regularly as part of his research activities into the epidemiology of parasitic infections that affect hundreds of millions of people living in the tropics and tropics. These include bilharzia (schistosomiasis), malaria, hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

Dr Booth visited Matangini School, in Makueni District, Kenya, where children had recently been treated for schistosomiasis. He asked the headmaster what the school would accept as a thanks for their co-operation, and the headmaster said a borehole would be highly beneficial. Not only do boreholes provide a safe source of drinking water, but they can be used to irrigate the school farm to help provide fresh vegetables all year round. Thus, the Matangini Project was born. Today, we have numerous fundraising initiatives (including several gift lines), and the project is now embedded within the registered charity Stand Up For Africa . The money raised is used to provide safe sources of water in rural schools, mainly in Kenya.
